This degree programme is the first of its kind in Scotland and one of the biggest innovations in the teaching of law at undergraduate level in Edinburgh Law School’s history. It is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to tackle today’s complex global challenges such as climate change, peace and conflict, and the regulation of AI.
Edinburgh Law School has a unique position at the crossroads of common law and civil law, and unparalleled expertise in global legal issues. These strengths ensure students learn about legal frameworks and structures and problems beyond the boundaries of any particular legal system, focus on solving global legal problems, and benefit from a strong focus on interdisciplinary methods.
“The new programme is an exciting approach to legal education that reflects the realities of global legal practice today,” said Dr Gail Lythgoe, a lecturer in Global Law. “Global law is a dynamic area to study and research, and Edinburgh Law School is one of the best places in the world to do so.”
This unique law degree will enable students to develop a range of skills to succeed in many different careers including the legal profession, public service, international organisations, the corporate world and civil society organisations. Students will also have the opportunity to expand their global perspectives and networks by taking part in a third year abroad at one of the university’s partner institutions.
Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is the sixth oldest university in the UK, is ranked in the world’s top 20 most international universities, and is one of the world’s top research-intensive universities. The Law School was established in 1707 and is one of the world’s leading Law Schools.
