Practising Law under Covid in Zim
In this edition of the Africa Legal podcast series Farai Nyabereka, a partner at Manokore Attorneys in Harare, Zimbabwe speaks to Carol Campbell about the challenges of the “new normal” for the southern African nation.
Farai is head of the firm’s Regulatory and Compliance Advisory Services, a role that places her at the coal face in dealing with regulatory and legislative developments.
Farai tells Carol about the challenges lawyers are facing as they change the way they work because of the pandemic.
The telecom infrastructure in Zimbabwe is good, she says, and can accommodate the needs of a Covid-19 world with most people, even in remote rural areas, having access to mobile phones. The mandate of every government is to ensure the wellbeing of its citizens and expanding the telecom and broadband will be a priority. However, where there is a lack of capacity, there will be new opportunities for the private sector, she says.
The pandemic has forced the legal fraternity to take stock and relook at how it is moving into the technological age and how it will work in an environment where physical contact has to be limited.
Farai also speaks about the impact on the mining in Zimbabwe and how this crucial industry is dealing with the health issues that have brought the sector to its knees.
