Opportunity Amidst Global Uncertainty

Much of the developed world is in turmoil at the moment, but such situations often produce the best opportunities. Hogan Lovells’ upcoming Africa in Focus event will look at how developing African markets can take advantage of the current global situation.

The two years following the Covid-19 pandemic have seen significant global political and economic uncertainty. Among other things, global trade is still coming to terms with the long-term effects of Brexit; the Russian invasion of Ukraine has significantly disrupted traditional supply chains in several sectors (including agriculture, energy and mining); and the United States and much of Europe have seen extended periods of inflation, interest rate increases and an ensuing cost-of-living crisis. These macroeconomic factors have naturally led to uncertainty in global financial markets, with international investors hesitant to commit to significant capital deployment in the face of uncertainty and volatility.

Against this global backdrop, resource and commodity-rich emerging markets with young and growing populations across Africa have reached a defining point in their development. What are the opportunities for those markets to fill the spaces created by the political, social and economic uncertainty affecting the developed world? How do they best position themselves to attract, sustain and grow the investment required to fulfil that potential, particularly given some of the infrastructure constraints still affecting those markets?

With a theme of “Africa: Opportunity Amidst Global Uncertainty”, the Hogan Lovells team and an impressive panel of leading industry and subject matter experts will interrogate this topic and how it affects key sectors across Africa.

Speakers include Chris Green (Hogan Lovells Johannesburg Managing Partner), Khululiwe Ntshangase (MultiChoice Africa), Hanns Spangenberg (Deloitte & Touche), Shibishi Maruatona (Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa), Willie Hattingh (RMB Corporate Finance) and Deepa Vallabh (Hogan Lovells).

The Africa in Focus: Southern Africa Chapter event will take place at Hogan Lovells’ office in Johannesburg on Thursday, 31 August 2023. The formal event will be followed by a networking opportunity. Click here to register.
