An accomplished lawyer with a distinguished career spanning three decades and vast experience in project development and capital markets, Nairobi-based Mungai (56) was known as a down-to-earth, generous man of integrity who was reliable and a fount of knowledge.
In addition to being the founding partner of MMC Asafo, Mungai was a former Chairman of the Postal Corporation of Kenya and Director of Kenya Development Corporation Limited (formerly ICDC). He held a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi and a Post Graduate Diploma from Kenya School of Law.
Floods of condolence messages on social media hailed him as a gentleman, while a tribute from the firm read: “Beyond work, NN taught us many things. He taught us to be true human beings, to care for those around us and those in need. He often reminded us through words and deeds to act beyond self. He was kind and generous. He taught us the value of continuous learning. He expected us to set aside one afternoon every week to learn something new. Nani taught us the value of happiness: he said that a happy human being was most effective.”
Wakili Edward Muriu, team leader at MMC ASAFO, remembered Mungai as “my business partner for 25 years, my brother, my groomsman, the voice of reason and wisdom in our boardrooms, my fun travelling compass during our many trips across the globe”.
Acknowledged as a philanthropist as well as a loving father, brother and son, Mungai’s death leaves a gaping hole in Kenya’s legal fraternity.
