The passing of a giant

George Etomi & Partners has announced the passing of their managing partner, Sotonye Inyeinengi-Etomi.

Sotonye Inyeinengi-Etomi was the brother of George Etomi, founder and principal partner of George Etomi & Partners. “Sotonye joined our firm soon after he was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988, after which he rose to become partner and was instrumental (in) the establishment of our Port Harcourt branch where he served as managing partner,” read a statement from the firm.

“Sotonye leaves behind a distinguished legal career spanning various commercial transactions and a myriad of different industries. His professional impact goes well beyond just his work at our firm. He took a sabbatical from the firm to take up appointment as Special Assistant to then Honourable Minister of Transport Dr. Abiye Samuel Precious Sekibo where he played a pivotal role in numerous Economic Reform Committees, contributing to the Expression of Interest on Port Concession and chairing the Finance and other Related Matters Sub Committee on Ports Reform. His leadership extended to the drafting of the CABOTAGE Guidelines and Regulations as Chairman of the Ministerial Committee,” the statement said.

“We remember Sotonye not only for his professional achievements but also for the warmth and kindness he brought to our workplace. His legacy is etched in the milestones he achieved and the lives he touched throughout his remarkable career.”

Condolences flooded in on social media after the announcement of his passing, drawing a clear picture of a well loved and respected boss, mentor and friend.

“Sotonye was indeed an asset wherever he stepped. In Christ Church, Port Harcourt, where I came in contact with him, he was a game maker who influenced the policies of the Church and this earned him his election to the office of President of the Men's League,” said Walter Ollor.

“I am so shocked to see this news, Uncle Sotonye gave my first ever job interning at George Etomi & Partners at 16 or 17 years old as I started my legal training...I never forgot his help and mentorship. Always so warm and kind,” said Loretta Okpokiri.

“My over ten years of working closely with him, he is a boss to work with. Words can’t explain how deep this loss is to us,” said Paago Joseph.

“What sad news and a huge loss! He was my friend and a nice gentleman! Remembering with nostalgia the fun and intellectually stimulating engagements we always had! He'll be surely missed!” said Bomoi Abdulmajid.

The team at Africa Legal would like to pass on their heartfelt condolences to the whole Etomi family and all our friends at George Etomi & Partners.
