New Course | Fundamentals of Effective Negotiation

The UK Ministry of Justice and GREAT Legal Services campaign, in partnership with Africa Legal, have launched the next online course in their Business Communication for Lawyers series.

This is the second course in Africa Legal’s collaboration with the UK Ministry of Justice, and focuses on the fundamentals of effective negotiation. Negotiation is not only a critical skill for lawyers, it is also a fact of life. We all negotiate regularly, knowingly or not. This course will provide you with the ability to:

  • Understand the central models and the core strategies of the negotiation process;
  • Identify the value of an interest-based negotiation strategy;
  • Interpret the importance of cultural awareness in negotiating complex agreements;
  • Develop a negotiation plan using data to your advantage.

This follows on from the successful first course in the series ‘Business Communication for Lawyers | Legal Writing’ where Africa Legal saw record numbers of learners from across Africa sign up with 99% stating they would recommend the course to a colleague or friend.

Speaking of the series, UK Director of Communications, Simon Barrett, said “We are delighted to continue our successful partnership with Africa Legal and build on our event series. We hope those who have taken course 1 are able to expand their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the tactics required for business negotiation.”

“This is the second in a very important series for our community,” commented James Leach, Africa Legal’s Chief Learning Officer, “as it results directly from audience feedback about the need for more effective communication skills training.”

Subject matter expert Jennifer Chimanga (nee Mbaluto) from Clifford Chance is welcomed back as the host of the course, and Africa Legal is delighted to introduce Gabriel Onaguruwa from leading Nigerian firm Olaniwun and Ajayi LP, and Rebecca Clark from IPOS Mediation, to provide international and local perspectives throughout the course.

The course is free and is available on the Africa Legal Learn platform here.
