NBA-SBL Conference 2019

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) Annual Conference is underway in Lagos from June 26 to 28. Chair of the conference planning committee, Dr Adeoye Adefulu, and friend of Africa Legal, spoke to Rilwan Shittu.

The NBA-SBL is one of the specialist sections of the NBA set up to engender the professional development of Nigerian commercial lawyers. Its annual business law conference is a flagship event on the NBA calendar. This week a host of local and international speakers are in Lagos to discuss key topics within the theme of the conference, “Growth, Investment & Employment: Beyond Rhetoric” which is centered on the challenges facing the Nigerian economy.

“Given that this was an election year, we believe it is a good time for the Nigerian government, at federal and state levels, to consider their successes and failures and plot a path to facilitate opportunities for our growing populace,” says Dr Adefulu.

As to his expectations from the conference and what participants will benefit, Dr Adefulu promises that the private and public sector will gain an understanding of where Nigeria stands as a nation and the pragmatic steps and solutions that could be adopted to ensure the development and growth of the economy.

“Nigeria is blessed with abundant human and natural wealth/resources but is still classified as an under-developed country due to our inability to cultivate these resources and move from being oil dependent to focusing on the development of other sectors.”

The hope is attendees will benefit from the knowledge shared by experts in various sectors, as well as international experts and identify and understand their role in the development of the economy.”

“Various conference sessions will examine the factors, steps and actions required to ensure economic growth and increase the rates of investment and employment. The role of legal practitioners and the opportunities for business growth and professional capacity development will be central to these discussions,” he says.

The NBA-SBL has been very active, especially in recent times. Many lawyers feel it is the most dynamic section of the NBA, especially in giving back to young lawyers through training, seminars, scholarships and other opportunities.

On how the NBA-SBL has been able to sustain this, Dr Adefulu says, “The NBA-SBL understands the younger generation of lawyers are the future of our economy and acknowledges their growth and development can be achieved through mentorship and interaction, thereby equipping them with the necessary tools to attain success in practice.”
