More muscle for London powerhouse

Africa-focused international law firm ASAFO & CO. has shown further commitment to building a strong London team with the recent recruitment of Weyinmi Popo who joins the team as Managing Partner of that office.

Popo, a native of Nigeria, is joining ASAFO & CO. London from Akin Gump. With over twenty years’ experience, his practice focuses on private equity and mergers & acquisitions (M&A). He has worked extensively on cross-border transactions involving a broad range of countries in Africa and internationally.

Popo’s addition to ASAFO & CO.’s international private equity/M&A team, already known for its leading position in Francophone Africa, will significantly expand the firm’s capabilities in Anglophone Africa. His vast experience of Nigeria and English-speaking ECOWAS countries, along with the natural synergies between the London practice and the firm’s teams in South Africa and Kenya, will provide impetus to escalate ASAFO & CO.’s Africa-wide M&A and private equity practice.

“My work has focused on Africa for the past several years, and joining ASAFO & CO. will give me the platform to truly develop an Africa-focused private equity/M&A practice on a larger scale,” commented Popo. “It is exciting to be part of a firm that has, to an extent, disrupted the African legal services market by establishing a hybrid position as being both international and local in key markets in Africa, while maintaining the standards of excellence of a global firm. Investor interest in Africa is high and will continue to increase as Africa’s key economies resume their growth and integrate more deeply, so this is really an exciting time to be joining the firm.”

Pascal Agboyibor, Managing Partner, ASAFO & CO. has worked with Popo for many years. “Weyinmi shares our values and approach as a law firm committed to the transformative work and projects that are shaping Africa’s future,” said Agboyibor. “His arrival is timely in that our firm will begin its fifth year in 2023, and we have earned the market recognition and trust from clients needed to grow further. His experience and know-how will help us gain more traction, particularly in English-speaking Africa.”
