Justice Challenge Opens

Entries are open for the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) Southern Africa’s annual Justice Challenge offering the most promising justice innovations the opportunity to take a leap forward with support from the innovator programme.

Applications will run until August 5 and can be entered here

In a statement HiiL Southern Africa said the game-changing innovative enterprises it was looking for were sustainable, scalable solutions to pressing justice needs. Winners would present promising innovations already showing measurable impact with the potential to become financially sustainable, and have the plans and ambition to scale across different markets. These enterprises would be led by a strong team with experienced and inspiring founders.

Themba Mahleka, co-head of the HiiL Justice Accelerator Southern Africa, said it was the fifth year that HiiL had run the Innovating Justice Challenge in the region and the enthusiasm for innovation in the sector was growing.

“This year, as a result of Covid-19, it’s become even more important to identify and support those startups and organisations which are modernising access to justice, and help them to reach more people, more quickly.”

The winning project is selected for support through the prestigious HiiL Justice Accelerator. This is the opportunity to be part of a four month programme that provides 10,000 EUR non-equity, non-debt, funding, business development support (which includes training, coaching and mentorship), access to a global network, international exposure, and connections for further investment opportunities for startups.

HiiL has supported more than 110 justice innovations worldwide since 2011. Some of these have impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people with the potential to become global players.

Hiil is supported by the Dutch Postcode Lottery to run the Justice Innovation programme in Southern Africa. To find out more email Themba Mahleka or Adam Oxford at justinnovateSA@hiil.org
