Crystal clear communication is key

We are delighted to announce the continuation of a valued partnership between the GREAT legal services team at the UK Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and Africa Legal. Building on a number of successful events, research projects and bespoke content over the last two years, the UK MOJ is demonstrating its commitment to the African legal community by providing free online courses developed and hosted by Africa Legal.

The first course, Legal Writing: Business Communication for Lawyers, will be made available for free on Thursday 23rd June 2022, and aims to demystify legal jargon, phrasing and antiquated terminology. Participants will receive an online certificate from the UK MOJ and continuous professional development points.

We hope to assist lawyers to provide clearer legal advice to their clients and, in turn, win more work by:

  • Identifying and sharing modern approaches to communicating with clients and colleagues;
  • Reviewing clients’ expectations of law firm communications;
  • Evaluating the fundamentals of a plain-language approach to communication.

This self-paced course is produced for the UK MOJ by the Africa Legal Learn team in collaboration with Clifford Chance. It includes discussion forums to enable learners to meet and engage with others on the course virtually. Participants will “learn by doing” via case studies and exercises, and by hearing from leading legal influencers including Jennifer Mbaluto (partner at Clifford Chance), Ronald Mutasa (partner at Manokokre Attorneys) and Sherisa Rajah (Global Labor & Employment Counsel at Vista).

“I am delighted that we are partnering with the UK MOJ again and in an area of our business we feel so passionate about,” commented Scott Cowan, founder of Africa Legal. “The growth of the legal sector in Africa relies on leading organisations sharing their invaluable experience.”

Zoë Holder, Head of the GREAT Legal Services Campaign at the UK Ministry of Justice, is equally enthusiastic. “This is an exciting phase for the campaign as we deliver our first course for African legal professionals, aimed at extending opportunities for development, shared learning, and strengthening collaboration between Africa and the UK,” she said. “We hope the course will enable learners to gain practical skills that can be directly applied to their work and encourage them to sign up for the next course.”
