Tarek Mohanna, who is a partner in the firm’s projects and finance practice, has a broad finance, capital markets and project finance background, with sectoral experience in the energy, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, hospitality, and telecoms practice.
Mohanna joins the partnership alongside colleague Said Hanafi, who is a corporate lawyer, part of the firm’s M&A practice. Both are based in Cairo, the firm’s North African outpost; it also has offices in Johannesburg. The duo form part of a 40-strong partnership round, in which other lawyers with active African practices were also promoted.
London’s Deji Adegoke was elevated for his work on project finance deals, including the highly regarded financing of the Nacala Project, in Malawi, which scooped up a number of legal and infrastructure industry awards, while Melbourne-based counsel, Candice Ota, and London-based energy lawyer, Kamran Ahmed, has also worked on African deals, among others.
The US firm executed a number of significant African-centred deals over the summer, including a guaranteed €334 million loan to the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank, and a landmark US$20 billion project financing of Mozambique's first onshore LNG development, on which Adegoke also assisted.
