Africa Legal launches new mining series
Mining Matters is the first edition of a series, reflecting on the role of the lawyer in African mining, that will be published across 2020.
It includes an array of interviews with some of the major players where they speak about the challenges they face, the issues they see emerging in the sector and also how they balance lives that are lived on the run.
Thanks go to the contributors which include: Webber Wentzel, Baker McKenzie, Dentons, Mayer Brown, Endeavour Mining, Bauba Resources, Corpus Legal Practitioners and Manokore Attorneys.
The series complements the debate at The General Counsel Forum | A Legal Indaba which takes place for the first time in February 2020 as part of the Mining in Africa conference in Cape Town. Hosts of the event are Hyve, in partnership with Africa Legal, and sponsored by Baker McKenzie and Dentons.
The series is planned to build and expand on the network and community of legal professionals in mining which has grown around the GC Forum by providing a centralised source of news and content most relevant to them.
Africa Legal Editor says that lawyers are at the forefront of the mining industry around the world. And, nowhere has their role become more crucial than in Africa. Because of an abundance of natural resources, almost every one of Africa’s 54 countries carries a legacy of exploitation. Negotiating new and sustainable relationships that benefit communities, investors and governments has become the territory of General Counsels. Through this series we reflect on this responsibility and what it means to in-house lawyers, their colleagues and law firms.
