Newly rebranded ALN Nigeria | Aluko & Oyebode is aiming to reshape African legal services. Joke Aliu and Gbenga Oyebode spoke to Craig Sisterson about innovation and building bridges across the continent.

Leading West African law firm ALN Nigeria | Aluko & Oyebode wants to redefine the African legal landscape and elevate standards across the continent via a multifaceted approach encompassing sustainability, innovation and agility, pioneering technologies, inclusion-driven workplaces, and client-centric services, say Joke Aliu and Gbenga Oyebode.

“To ensure sustainability, we are implementing a comprehensive ESG policy, reducing our carbon footprint, and championing diversity and inclusion,” explained Aliu, the firm’s co-managing partner. “Technologically, we are investing in the next generation of document management and collaboration tools, enhanced project management methodologies, and artificial intelligence to augment client interactions and operational workflows.”

Nigeria’s leading commercial law firm joined ALN over a year ago, and formally integrated and rebranded on 24 January 2024. A pan-African network of preeminent firms in 15 countries, ALN offers exemplary local and cross-border expertise, with clients also benefiting from “seamless collaboration” with affiliated firms in more than 250 locations worldwide.

The long-term vision, said Oyebode, is to become Africa’s premier integrated legal services provider, seamlessly connecting clients with expertise wherever needed. Embracing technology to streamline processes and communication, harnessing innovation and being agile, and forming specialised teams dedicated to future-driven sectors will all play a role.

“Our recent advancements include leveraging generative AI facilitation, advancements in ERP & CRM systems for greater operational cohesiveness, adopting practices to effectively manage mobile and remote devices, and integrating business applications for seamless inter-departmental collaboration,” pointed out Aliu. “Our client-centric focus involves advancing into a highly secure and robust client portal and implementing real-time data access.”

But charting new territories for legal service excellence and building a bridge across Africa is not just about technical expertise or embracing new technology, noted Oyebode, Of Counsel for ALN Nigeria | Aluko & Oyebode and co-founder of the pioneering Nigerian firm.

“We’re also driven by a dedication to diversity and inclusion, fostering a workplace that reflects Africa’s rich tapestry and valuing every voice,” he said. “We’re excited about innovation and constantly pushing the boundaries of legal service delivery through technology, but what also sets us apart is our commitment to people and values. We invest in talent, ensuring a skilled workforce that’s prepared for the future. We embrace diversity, sustainability and ethical practices, reflecting the evolving expectations of our clients and the continent.”

With its history of success in cross-border transactions, coupled now with ALN membership, ALN Nigeria | Aluko & Oyebode is “a catalyst for positive change”, said Aliu, ideally placed to contribute significantly to Africa’s economic growth and development.

“This membership enables smooth collaboration and the formation of multi- jurisdictional teams for both pitching and joint execution of work on the continent. Armed with deep local expertise, a pan-African mindset, and commitment to technology and innovation, the firm ensures effective counsel on cultural, political, and economic intricacies,” Aliu added.

For Oyebode, it’s all about providing seamless, ethical, and sustainable legal solutions that empower Africans to thrive. “When clients see the ALN Nigeria | Aluko & Oyebode name, they are not only seeing a law firm, they're seeing a bridge being built, a continent connecting, and a future where legal excellence knows no borders,” he said.
