Expanding securitisation appetite in Africa

After a year that saw several landmark securitisation transactions in West Africa, interest is growing ahead of this week’s Africa Securitisation Forum in Togo.

Later this week 1 000 financial industry leaders, bankers, insurers, fintechs, capital markets, mobile money operators, policy makers and regulators from Africa and beyond will gather for the annual Africa Financial Industry Summit (AFIS) in Lomé, Togo. A side event focusing on securitisation is garnering great interest too.

AFIS brings together the most influential stakeholders in African finance. Over two days (15 and 16 November) of conferences, debates and high-level meetings, the organisers strive to develop concrete solutions to the many challenges facing the sector and build a more inclusive and robust pan-African financial services industry.

On 16 November Asafo & Co and Deloitte are running a side event focusing on securitisation in Africa. The title of this, the second annual WAEMU & Africa Securitisation Forum gathering, is Securitisation in the WAEMU: Lessons from 2023 & Future Outlook.

With the West African market having embraced securitisation in the last couple of years, it’s become obvious that the securitisation market has enormous potential in the WAEMU zone. The Africa Securitisation Forum offers an opportunity to exchange ideas on the prospects and challenges of securitisation in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) zone and in Africa as a whole.

The WAEMU & Africa Securitisation Forum aims to promote securitisation as an alternative and complementary financing instrument for African economies, while capturing technical and financial innovations. The forum has set out to become the go-to platform for stakeholders to learn about the latest technical and financial developments in this fast evolving segment.

The forum has the backing of BOAD (West African Development Bank), and will gather together key players in the securitisation ecosystem. A number of high level delegates will attend, including Sani Yaya, Minister of Economy and Finance of Togo; Sergio Pimenta, Vice-President for Africa of IFC; Serge Ekue, President of the BOAD; Félix Amenounve, Managing Director of BRVM; Ripert Bossoukpe, Secretary General of AMF UMOA; and Anouar Hassoune, Managing Director of GCR Ratings.

Asafo & Co. has advised on many of the region’s securitisation deals, making the firm instrumental to the market’s development.
