In today’s increasingly interconnected world, global risks (whether geopolitical, economic, or technological) pose growing challenges for the peaceful settlement of disputes, says Joan Donohue, former president of the International Court of Justice.
“As practitioners, we must be agile, forward thinking and open to ideas to ensure that the legal mechanisms underpinning dispute resolution remain both effective and responsive. I look forward to exploring these challenges at LIDW25.”
Judge Donohue, now an arbitrator at Twenty Essex Chambers in London, will deliver a keynote address at LIDW’s Main Conference on Tuesday 3 June at the QEII Centre in Westminster, as part of an exciting LIDW programme revealed this month.
The LIDW25 agenda will bring together a diverse range of speakers to explore key challenges and opportunities shaping global dispute resolution, says LIDW Co-Chair Jonathan Cary, a partner at RPC. “As innovation and geopolitical shifts continue to redefine the landscape, this year’s conference will foster critical discussions and fresh perspectives from leading experts across jurisdictions and industries.”.
Before the Main Conference begins, LIDW will kick off on Monday, 2 June with International Arbitration Day, reaffirming arbitration’s role as an integral pillar of dispute resolution and London’s status as a global arbitration centre.
The International Arbitration Day sessions will be hosted by a hub formed by Linklaters, Simmons & Simmons, and Squire Patton Boggs, and are free to attend.
The sessions in each hub firm will begin with a keynote, followed by four in-person panel sessions, with delegates able to swiftly move between the hub firms to attend various sessions, such as Nigerian arbitrator Professor Emilia Onyema moderating a panel on “An ideal seat? Perspectives from established and emerging seats” at Simmons & Simmons at 11am, or the “Tale of two Continents: cross-jurisdictional perspectives on mining arbitrations from Latin America and Africa” panel at Squire Patton Boggs at 4.30pm examining the boom in mining, and mining disputes.
International Arbitration Day concludes with the LIDW25 opening reception at Southwark Cathedral. The following day, the full-day Main Conference will feature a lineup of senior members of the judiciary, arbitrators, business leaders, in-house and private practice lawyers, barristers, experts and legal technology specialists.
Panel discussions will address the evolving challenges giving rise to global disputes and explore how disputes professionals and institutions are adapting to an increasingly complex legal and commercial landscape, with topics including:
Geopolitical and economic influences on disputes;
Supply chain disputes and risk mitigation;
Judicial innovation in dispute resolution;
Ethical responsibilities in dispute resolution; and
The future of dispute resolution practice.
